A lot of female consults present to me with red, flushed skin around their mouth and chins with little breakouts. This is usually "perioral dermatitis", a first cousin to rosacea.
In femaies the breakouts are mostly hormonal because the blood vessels and skin cells in that area have many receptors for female estrogen and progesterone hormones. Fluctuations in hormones duing the month can often be noticed as can entering perimenopause or menopause. Something to keep in mind. However, one of the first things to look as is your lipbalm, chapstick or lipstick. These products have dozens of rosacea-unfriendly ingredients -- pepppermint, spearmint, eucalyptus and dozens of types of oils. These alll seap down to the edges of the mouth and can induce rosacea or periolral dermatitis. This products now are loaded with vasodilators to bring out the redness of the lips as this is a 2010 thing.... but, bad news for rosaceans. Take a break from your lipbalms, chapsticks or lipsticks or just stick to the blistex version with dimethicone and glycerin.... these are rosacea friendly ingredients. Don't underestimate the rosacea flares that can be provoked by these products as my clients have often experienced complete releif and clearance by changing their lipsticks and lipbalms. _
