Default Can Antibiotics and Rosadyn Clash?

I take 3 Rosadyn a day, after meals, because I seem to react to them if I take more than that. {Would love some wisdom on that issue as well}.

I ran out of Azithromycin recently and refused to go back and see my essentially worthless dermatologist just for a scrip. I took some, basically, left over Minocycline from an earlier presciptio til it was done. I was experiencing some pretty severe swelling on and around the nose, and breakouts as well. I called the Dr. whose laser tech had worked on me in Oct. and he put me on a 1 week course of Clarithromycin, 500 mg, twice a day. That was a week and a half ago. Finished the course, it seemed to really help, then the last day or so I starting breaking out. Couldn't figure out what was causing it at the time and thought, "There's no way it could be the antibiotic."

I have another 2 week course of Clarithromycin XL, once a day, and took one Friday but have not since. I have two huge pustules on my face right now and am unsure as to what to do or where to turn. Has anybody had a problem with antibiotics and Rosadying clashing? Is anybody still on antibiotics? Could this outbreak be due to the Clarithro?

Desperately seeking answers.

Hi Ric,

You have just detailed the natural progression of rosacea. This is not due to the antibiotic or Rosadyn OR the combination of either. It is the end result of the swelling you experienced. Over time the fluid and proteins will signal immune cells to the area, most notably inflammatory neutrophils. These cellls will then slowly migrate up to the surface and result in skin erruptions - papules and pustules. I would definitely stay on clarithromycin and Rosadyn. You can go up to 1,000 mgs of Clarithromycin XL per day and always realize that there is a delay before the onest of clearance and also a delay in the onset of symptoms.

Clarithromycin is a great med. Cardiologists are now using it permanently to reduce vascular inflammation and plaque formation. You might want to consider pulse dosing after you clear.... one tab on Saturday and one on Wed. to maintain clearance and treat your rosacea synergistically with Rosadyn.

Please keep us all updated on your progress.

Dr. Nase,

Thank you for the reply.

I have not taken a Biaxin {Clarithromycin} for the past week, since Friday before last. It took all of last week for my breakout to heal and is still not fully finished.

My question is: Do you recommend restarting the daily dose of 500 mg now, or pulse dosing as you suggested? For the past week I have taken Rosadyn only and am wondering whether to stay with it alone, pulsing as you said, or get back on the once a day Clarithro along with Rosadyn. Any help would be appreciated.

I also noticed in someone else's post that MCT Quercetin has helped them significantly with swelling on the nose and face. I found a website with a supposedly readily bio-available version of this. Does anyone know of a good version of this which can be purchased at Walgreen's or something akin?

Ric,

In medicine you want to achieve a steady blood dose, so take the meds daily to achieve physiological levels, then you can back off and reduce to a pulse dose protocol and see how your body responds.

Rosadyn and clarithromycin should be synergistic in actions and I see no contraindications.

I like the MCT Quercetin or the Optimized Quercetin brands. This ingredient is very hard to absorb, so you must go with a proven brand like the two above.
Also, Quercetin plus bromelain, which is very popular, is not bioavailable, so please do not waste your money.

Ric,

I use Clarithromycin 500 mgs with double strength rosadyn and find they work very well together. Probably better than either one alone. I plan on staying on both as my primary treatment as my response has been very good.

Default question for jd

jd, how long have you taken 500mgs clarithromycin? Do you take once or twice a day? Does it give you stomach upset? When you say it works great, what symptoms did it clear up? How long have you been on rosadyn? Also any sunscreens you like, I live in hawaii and I am having a hard time with finding one that doesn't turn my face greasy and white. Thanks, ladygolf
